Battle of Bomarsund
Bomarsund Fortress is the largest military installations built ever in the Aland Islands. Its ruins are located in the municipality of Sund Mariehamn.
Russian fortress was built in the days when Finland and the islands were part of the Russian Empire. Aland Islands had become a fortified military posts in the western part of the country. Construction of the main fort lasted for twelve years. Strengthening and building was not completed because of the Crimean War. Mighty bastion was burned by the local population, to prevent the enemy shelter within its walls. Later red brick fortress Bomarsund became the basis of many structures, including the Assumption Cathedral in Helsinki.
Fortress ruins of Bomarsund are original card Åland. This place attracts tourists with its rich history and unique nature. Not far from the fortress is a museum dedicated to the history Bomarsund.
