Kastelholm Castle

Kastelholm Castle is the only medieval castle in the Aland Islands, located in the commune of Sund. Check the castle grounds is unknown, but the first time it is mentioned in chronicles in 1388. Architecture built quite complicated, Kastelholm expanded and built in the late 14th to mid-17th centuries. During this period the castle was strategically important object and the center of the Aland archipelago. In subsequent years, there was a prison. In 1745 the castle was damaged by fire and was restored only in the 20th century. Nowadays Kastelholm castle open to the public. Near the castle Museum State prison Vita Björn and Ian Karlsgordena Museum.
