Svartholm fortress
Svartholm fortress ruins are on the island about ten kilometers from the town of Loviisa in Finland. Fortress was erected in 1748 - 1764 years to protect against Russian troops.
In connection with the military events of those times fortress and its defenses were never completed. After the Russian-Swedish war of 1808-1809 the fortress lost its strategic importance. Some time its walls were a naval base and prison. During the Crimean War Svartholm was destroyed. Ruins were abandoned until the 1960s, is not restoration work began.
Today the fortress is in Loviisa is very popular among tourists. It's a great place for outdoor recreation. There are all conditions for a picnic and a small restaurant.
